CES delivers new super-post-Panamax cranes to APM Terminals Elizabeth
First two of six new STS cranes
The introduction of two new cranes at APM Terminals Elizabeth marks the beginning of a significant USD70 million modernization effort. These cranes are the first two STS cranes in a series of six, supplementing the four existing cranes that already service ultra-large container vessels. By the first quarter of 2025, the terminal is set to feature a total of 10 super-post-Panamax cranes, all identical, enhancing operational standardization and elevating efficiency and reliability standards. Including the four existing super-post Panamax cranes, the terminal will boast a total of 14 cranes along its 6,000-foot (1,829 meter) quay.
CES was responsible for all equipment design review, quality assurance, manufacturing supervision, project management, commissioning and factory and site acceptance tests.
CES Managing Director Kay Geithner explained, “We were thrilled to have an excellent project across the board, with high customer satisfaction across project management, quality and commissioning expertise. We have four more cranes to come, which are currently in the manufacturing process.”
Record cargo volumes
As of October 2023, the Port of NY & NJ has processed over 6.5 million TEUs for the year, with APM Terminals Elizabeth contributing to nearly one-fourth of the port’s container throughput during this period.
These new cranes are part of a broader USD200 million terminal enhancement initiative. This project has seen significant improvements, including strengthening of the berth area, a revamped gate facility and trucker appointment system, and the acquisition of additional cranes. These enhancements have boosted the terminal’s vessel lift capacity from 900,000 to more than 1.5 million lifts per year.
