CES supports one million TEU expansion at APM Terminals Tangier MedPort operational

Today marks the completion of Phase 2 of the expansion at APM Terminals Tangier MedPort, Morocco, adding over a million TEU in capacity. This phase extends over 18 hectares, featuring seven new container stacks and an extra 400-meter berth. The upcoming Phase 3, scheduled for 2025, is set to further boost capacity by an additional million TEU.

CES played a pivotal role in this expansion, offering services in equipment design review, quality assurance, manufacturing oversight, project management, and both commissioning and acceptance testing at the factory and site levels.

This expansion reinforces the status of the semi-automated APM Terminals MedPort Tangier as a leading global example of technological sophistication, efficiency, and safety in container terminal operations.

The Phase 2 upgrade includes 14 electric automated rail-mounted gantry cranes and 11 semi-automated hybrid shuttle carriers from Kalmar. These additions are aimed at enhancing productivity and contributing to lower CO2 emissions. The terminal now boasts four new remote-controlled, ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, among the world’s largest, with an impressive 82-meter outreach. Capable of handling vessels carrying up to 24,000 TEU or 26 containers in width, these dual STS cranes significantly elevate the terminal’s handling capacity and operational turnaround, thereby improving customer service and overall experience.

Innovations at the terminal also include an advanced auto-mooring system. Automated vacuum pads along the extended quay section enhance safety and efficiency, reducing mooring and release times for vessels to approximately 15 minutes each, cutting down about an hour of idle time in total.

Tanger Med Port, home to two APM Terminals container terminals, was ranked as the fourth most efficient port globally in a recent index by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Strategically positioned at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, APM Terminals Tangier MedPort has rapidly become a significant global player, offering an attractive option for multinationals considering nearshoring operations. CES was proud to support the expansion with our expert services.
